Nutrition (2009)

Amid another recession and possibly the beginning of another new depression an under-active over-eating populace should being thinking about nutrition in this time of economical survival. I was born during the great depression of the 1930’s and 40’s living on a farm where we grew everything we ate. We didn’t encounter the problems of hunger like people in the inner city (90% of the population lived on the farm, today 90% of the population live in the city), although there were also hungry people in the countryside. I feel very sorry for this spoiled, overweight, obese generation who have gorged themselves with rich, high-calorie, worthless, expensive food which they have eat not because they are hungry, but simply because it tastes good.

Of all the people who have worked for me over the years, most have come from homes where the children, not the parents determine the diet. Perhaps the most disturbed example was a mother of three who said, “my children will not eat leftovers”. This writer has been around the world eight times, has had his passport stamped in 157 countries and has been in the world's most productive countries several times, such as in Europe and Asia. In the third world countries, places such as Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Ghana, I have seen hungry children, heard them with their begging bowls begging for food or anything that can ease the pain of hunger. God wanted me to see both the largess and distress of this world.

I’ve never been able to eat in a expensive restaurant. The thought of paying twenty dollars for a meal is repulsive to me. Food of any sort is NEVER thrown away in my house. I have heard of lobbyists who spend hundreds of dollars on meals for politicians, just to gain their vote for something. I have known people on airline flights (in the past, since they don’t serve food on airlines anymore) to say, “I don’t eat that type of food“. Like hospital food, it was always good to me. I have heard the children of relatives complain about the food that was served to them. In the home where I was raised, we were not allowed to say anything bad about the food on the table and, as my mother said many times, ”when you're hungry you will eat” and it would make me very happy to put my feet under my mother’s table again.

I have in my large collection of antiques, papers and maps showing that my ancestors came over and settled and founded Morristown, New Jersey. I have a cast iron fireplace cooking pot which was probably brought over from England, the fireplace cooking pot was the method used by the colonial settlers to cook food, since the cook's stove, as we know it, had not yet been invented in this country. Unlike my mother's ’’home comfort” stove the iron cooking pot was hung in the fire place where every meal was what is known today as “pot pies”: pieces of meat, veggies, potatoes, and boiled eggs were all stirred and cooked together. I still have a large wooden ladle which was used to take this mixture out the pot after being cooked and place it upon plates where my early ancestors ate and gave thanks to almighty God for his abundance. Today’s young people would not think of eating such food. Even in my youth, my folks still cooked in this manner, only using a large pan in the oven. It was not until I was a military army officer that I realized the people had large pieces of meat cooked for them a certain way: “medium, well done, etc”.

The most disgusting of the seven deadly sins is the sin of gluttony. I have encountered it on cruise ships, where there are many dining rooms all serving 5 meals each day catering to the whims of pampered, overweight, nauseating passengers. No human body has the needs or can utilize that much food. As one gets older, particularly past the age of 70, less and less food is required for the body. If an older person is to retain a decent body weight, size and desired health, eating from a saucer is desirable, yet in many geriatric groups I find that the older people only think of food. You can get easily knocked down at noon on Sunday morning at most churches, if you do not get out the way of the older people who are rushing to the buffets and restaurants in most cities.

Dr. R.G. Lee, great pastor of the Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, often said ”we spend the entire week working, teaching, visiting and I preach my heart out on Sunday morning all leading to the invitation at the end of service to find that most of the members are only interested in their belly. The scriptures say their belly is their God (Philippians 3:19), the sermon trying to give their souls the bread of life.” He further said, “most are worried about eating and that they will try to leave early running over people heading to the exit doors of the church.”

For your nutrition, the best thing you can do is to throw all the salt and sugar out of your house, limit your food intake. Billions of dollars are spent on worthless diets . The only way to lose weight is to limit what you put in your throat and get off your lazy behind and exercise. You have enough blood vessels, if in a straight line, it would go across the nation, 2,000 miles. You want that most important muscle, the heart, to keep pumping blood through those vessels. God put on the Earth all the chemicals “listed in the periodic table” that the most important blood supply needs, gained through the digestive system to nourish the cells of your body. But, you don’t need to clog your heart and vessels with JUNK (fructose, sodium glutenates, etc ) and, above all the most important item to keep out of your system is aspartame and other chemical sweeteners. Science, technology and greed, “another one of the seven deadly sins”, food manufacturers in an attempt to preserve food have concocted items which will put you in a early grave. As we face the dilemma involved in the economic purchase of food, along with everything else, buy food that will help you, not HARM you. Eating healthy will be expensive, but not as expensive as paying for not eating healthy. What you put in your body, determines your health, your immune system. We bring most sickness upon ourselves because of what we put in our body. Your body is the temple of God (1 Corinthians 6:19), treat your body with reverence.

Gratefulness Day

For many years Thanksgiving Day, truly the American holiday, was celebrated in this blessed country with an attitude of gratefulness. In my lifetime, I have seen Thanksgiving disappear amid the pagan decorations of Halloween and the heathen decorations of Christmas. The stores, the merchants, pay little attention to Thanksgiving, too involved with trying to make their profit for the year during the spending and spreeing of the Christmas holiday season which isn't even called Christmas anymore.

Any emphasis placed on Thanksgiving, which most young people simply call “Turkey Day”, involves gluttony. I get so tired of hearing people talk incessantly about gorging themselves on this one day of the year. So intent with stuffing themselves, watching a lackluster parade in New York City, and then some millionaires running up and down the athletic field in a game called football. The gratitude to God for abundance is unknown in the minds of those who look forward to government checks rather than to the gifts of God. Our forefathers knew how to be thankful for the care and abundance of divine providence. It is rare to find anyone who has any historical knowledge of the life of those who founded the country.

The Pilgrims, persecuted in England for their religious separation, finally escaped to Holland. It was from Holland that they made their way to the new world, seeking religious freedom and opportunity. I have documents of my own family who landed in the early years. They tell how many died on ship and how many died after they finally reached land. They sought opportunity. Can we even imagine what life was like for the children of these early settlers? I have the survey map of my first relatives in Morristown, NJ, dated 1766. I have, here in the room where I am dictating this, the iron fireplace cooking pot which hung in the fireplace in which they cooked all their meals. It was not until I was in the military service that I realized some people would eat a large piece of meat. My family, even until my birth, cooked all meals in a large container, meat and vegetables cooked together in one large dish, which now you call a casserole or potpie.

Of course, the younger members of my family are caught up in the same type satanic, ghoulish, gluttony with which the rest of the world is entangled. They know nothing about fasting and praying, and I'm sorry to say, most of them know nothing about the redemption and salvation of our blessed Lord. Like hogs at the trough, most young people, and the X-generation, are just rabid eaters, absorbing every pleasant life activity coming their way. Little thought is given for the gratefulness for a comfortable home, comfortable vehicles, plentiful pantries and closets, opportunities in the work force and the chance for responsibility in the rearing of children and increasing all possibilities in life. Worship is something for the fanatics, with the increase in education we play along to get along with God as with everyone else. This is my family and your family on a modern Thanksgiving day. Eating and treating, laughing and clapping, compassionless, ruthless, thankless.

Food is the last thing most Americans, and particularly members of my family, should think about. 60% of all Americans are overweight or obese. Diabetes affects about 50% of the population. Next to toxic food, the most toxic liquid you can put in your body is soft drinks especially those with aspartame. 80% of your body is water, just as 80% of the Earth is water. The water molecule is the most important nutrient of human consumption. If it were not for Medicare paying the expense, most elderly would not have the replacement joints from carrying around excess weight. The substance in plastic, which mimics estrogen, leaches out of all plastic bottles and capsule containers leading to the effeminization of most males. Just a few years ago, it was unusual to hear the words “gay” or “homosexual” anywhere. The idea of gay marriage, gay preachers, gay bishops, was as remote as a UFO landing on the lawn of the White House. Do you ever wonder why there is so much autism, ADHD, etc., in our vocabulary? From birth until the age of two, the baby gets 25 vaccinations at the very time that the baby is trying to develop an immune system. Vaccinations before the age of two are insignificant just as sight requirements before the age of five, when a child's eyes are fully developed, are a waste. With all our leaning, in most areas, we have become less enlightened, to the uninitiated, everything is obscure.

The Giver of every good and perfect gift awaits your gratefulness. You can trust in God for everything you need, can He trust in you? This is all He asks to those who are called, elected, conformed, justified and glorified (Romans 8:28-30). The greatest truth known to man is the direct relationship between you and God. A relationship of trust, provided by our blessed Lord Jesus Christ, this is gratefulness and joy beyond compare.

On many world travels, I ate Thanksgiving in several places. At Khartoum, in the Sudan, the hotel tried to make me a typical American with a typical American Thanksgiving dinner. It looked like a cooked pigeon on a bed of rice. The server said, “We know you Americans eat a bird one a day year to celebrate flight!”.

Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.” (Psalm 97:12)

Spin Offs

Popular radio and television programs resulted in spin-offs of other programs. For instance, “The Great Gildersleeve”, starring Harold Peary, was a spin off of “Fibber McGee and Molly”, which was one the greatest radio shows that lasted 15 years. It is possible that “The Great Gildersleeve” became more popular than “Fibber McGee and Molly”. “The Jeffersons” was a spin off from “Archie Bunker”.

Reality television is a genre of television programming that presents purportedly unscripted dramatic or humorous situations, documents actual events, and usually features ordinary people instead of professional actors. Although the genre has existed in some form or another since the early years of television, the term reality television is most commonly used to describe programs of this genre produced since 2000. Evidently, the Heene family of Fort Collins, Colorado, already appearing in a reality show, “Wife Swap” was anxious to involve themselves in another reality show involving their young son in a runaway balloon. They have now admitted to the hoax after alerting concerned people around the world, and making the entire incident an international source of compassion. Even more ridiculous is the fact that a news organization was involved. It is the same old story, a lie or a hoax will make the news. But, the truth involving something that should be publicized is left on the cutting floor.

Television news has become as much fiction as non-fiction, with more lies and propaganda than truth. In the warfare between the state-controlled TV sources, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, etc., Fox news has been left out of the breach, insisting on reporting truthfulness instead of White House-approved pablum. In Mr. Obama's hit list, enemies list, some of the news personnel on Fox have been segregated to the “back of the bus”. Such is the spin off from the Bill of Rights and the amendments to our Constitution.

Incomprehensible is the spin off of the atheistic, druid, satanic celebration of Halloween. How parents lead their children into a Christian Sunday school where they are taught the compassion of sharing, can allow them to dress as “haints” or weirdos and act as freaks begging for cheap candy which at best will only rot out their teeth and at worst may get them attacked by a spingola pedophile leaves to credibility of a psychological sort. It is bad enough to radically commercialize the supposed birth date of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It has become a testing of Newton's laws of physics to ascertain how store shelves can contain the festooned “junk” of combined Halloween and Christmas. We spin off to Satan every avarice disdained by common sense. Inappropriate to the world, and the church goers so attracted to the ideas of the world, is the celebration of the patriotic holidays of Thanksgiving and Columbus Days.

Another spin off, which I detest, is the gluttony involved at the most solemn time of anyone's life, the death of a relative or friend. Overeating is the greatest health problem in Americana. Gluttony has lead to an epidemic of diabetes, joint replacements, and the chief reason for deaths in the big three, heart attack, cancer and stroke. In most homes now, before the funeral crepe wreath is placed on the outside of the front door, food of every description, mostly potato salad, fried chicken and custard pie, streams into the back door. Instead of the family and relatives “fasting” and spending their time remembering the deceased, most are decimating chicken parts and piles of cake. What a way to grieve the absence of a loved one!

President Obama has increased the national debt an additional 1.4 trillion, to nearly $13 trillion ($14 trillion as of this reposting). A $13 billion gift to Social Security recipients is just in time to buy some turkey trimmings, some tree trimmings as a spin into our mail box of $250.00.

Recently, a preacher told me he went to the house of a sick church member. He told him he wanted to pray with him for his recovery. The member said, “You can pray, but remember, I get a check.” The spin off for many elderly and disabled, is their interest in green government checks rather than great mercies of healing and redemption. Who needs God when you have the spin off of government?

Oprah Winfrey, this country's richest woman, learned long ago that is trauma, the expose of a traumatic story, which increases her listening audience. Let's face it, our fellow human beings, our relatives, are only interested in bad news, in fact it is not even considered news unless it disturbing. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of the Queen of England and the father of her four children, perhaps more popular among their subjects than the Queen. Now eighty eight years of age, was asked by the British tabloids on his fortieth birthday, what he would like for a birthday gift. He said, “I do not want to see anything but good news on the front page of every UK paper.” This was the most difficult assignment ever given to a newspaper. Only bad news gets the headlines, never does a nation become more patriotic than at a time of Pearl Harbor, the knocking down of the World Trade Center, the Merle building bombing in Oklahoma. The spin off of flying flags, playing nationalistic music.

When Johnny comes marching home again
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer and the boys will shout
The ladies they will all turn out
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.
(When Johnny Comes Marching Home – Civil War era, spin off)
