Suicide Culture

Animals and even plants, in their DNA, a dynamic instinct for life... living. It is difficult to kill any type plant, even a weed. In times of drought, the root will go deep, seeking moisture. I have known animals, caught in traps, to chew off a limb seeking freedom. This is the reason, with all the challenges of living, that human beings will commit suicide. There is more suicide among young people, college students, even in the military services, than ever before in history. Elie Wiesel, holocaust survivor, in his book about survivors said, “Totally depressed, one knew that all he had to do was start running for the fence, and he would be shot, it all would be over.”

Once, a cousin with HIV/AIDS begged me to assist him with suicide. One college friend, walked into his apartment to find his roommate, head blown off with a gun. As horrific as suicide with individuals, one actually reaching that point when there is no challenge to go further, the suicide of a nation, a culture of people... such waste, such loss.

I was in Jerusalem when the city was separated, the Islamic from the Jewish. Outside the dome of the rock, Muslim-Jordan, an Islamic cleric told me, “A short distance away, Jews putting prayers into a wailing wall, once Solomon's temple. Muslims can wait, over one billion believers, we will use capitalism, communism, whatever, to achieve our goal then, we will eliminate them also.” We know that Muslims do not mind killing one another. (1988 Iran-Iraq war – one million killed: this writer heard Kissinger himself say, “Too bad they both cannot lose.”)

Next to Islam, over one billion followers, Catholicism, over one billion believers yet, Catholics voted 54% for Obama. Recently, January 20, three days before the March for Life, Obama “ruled” that Catholic universities-hospitals-charities must pay for health insurance that covers sterilization, contraceptives and abortifacients. At a time of “ask don't tell”, same-sex marriage, unisex bathrooms, toy stores are taking down signs separating boy and girl toys. There will no longer be gender specific toys. Liberals-democrats now tell us that gender is a choice, even some girls are too feminine, others not feminine enough... even parents unconcerned about effeminate sons. A builder told me recently that it is difficult for him to find a young man to work for him willing to climb a ladder. In this town, only Mexicans will “roof” a building. From the beginning of biblical history, life was never easy. Our first parents determined that... original sin. But, with His chosen people, Jews, leaving bondage, healthy (not a sickly one among them, Psalm 105, even their clothing never to wear out, song of Asher, “Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.” (Deuteronomy 33:25)) God then, as now, supplying every need for the trip, long or short. God did not “shoe” them with flip-flops, bedroom slippers, even combat boots. OUR TRIP IS TOUGH, WE NEED SHOES OF IRON.

Abraham, first Jew, “father of a multitude”, twin grandsons, Esau and Jacob, teaches us about election, seed and the sower. Jacob, “mamas boy”, cheater, God chose. (Romans 9:13)... a marvelous story of two cheaters, uncle Laban, nephew Jacob. But, at Bethel, Jacob wrestled with God until he was reborn with a new name... new creation... new character, Israel. From Leah, ten sons, Rachel, two sons... the unending story of Joseph, enslaved children of Israel, history until this very day.

The Hebrew word for eternal, VanGuard. Everything in our lives is relevant, except to God. Einstein blew our objectivity of time and space, but God, is not surprised at anything. We will not shock Him... our successes or failures. He is the beginning and the end, Alpha and Omega, everything has already happened in His mind. When God says something once, you should take notice. Four times, God said, “Be strong and of good courage.” (Psalm 46) God is not surprised at anything, even the stupidity of a culture intent on suicide.
